What is an otacousticon?

It is the official name for a hearing aid or ear trumpet used in the early 17th Century. Below is one from the 19th century described as a Portable ear trumpet with telescopic tubes. The website source also mentions it is signed F.C. Rein & Sons sole inventors and only makers; no. 108, Strand, London.

Hearing aids have come along way since then, some are funky colours, others are virtually invisible, and some are even drilled into the side of your head known as BAHA (or a bone anchored hearing aid).
